Check out the South Chinese Wall trip details below, but if you are wanting something else, then be sure to explore our other summer trips.
As always guests arrive at the 7 Lazy P guest ranch the afternoon prior to the departure date of the scheduled trip. After breakfast and final gear preparation, guests and crew will take the vehicles to the Benchmark trailhead west of Augusta. This is about a 2 hour trip, and we should be there just before noon. We will be met by crew and guests who are coming out of the Pretty Prairie camp after a trip down the Sun River. Groups will swap here and the mules loaded with the new gear and supplies, and this group will then go back to the Pretty Prairie camp location which is only about 7 miles down the South Fork of the Sun River, where you will camp for one night. There is very good fishing in the South Fork and the Pretty Prairie guard cabin is a popular attraction.
We load up and move camp up the West Fork of the Sun. This is a shorter day on river grade trails. We will make camp down near the river. Total: About 8 miles and 3 hours on the trail
This is a layover day. There is fishing available right out of camp on the West Fork. The popular activity at this location is a day ride to the top of Prairie Reef Lookout. From top of the Reef there is magnificent 360 views of the Sun River Valley, the Swan Range to the west, Scapegoat Mountain, the Flathead Alps and on a clear day some peaks of Glacier Park.
We load up again and continue west past the Indian Point guard cabin, where we will turn north towards the Chinese Wall and into the head of the Moose Creek drainage. We'll camp for two nights on an alpine bench with spectacular views of the wall, especially at sunset and sunrise. Total: About 13 miles with 5 hours of riding time
A layover day with lots of hiking options. The popular hike is to the base of the wall and up through Trick Pass, a fault chute in the formation, and then to the top of the wall itself. From here you can look down into the White River drainage and the many snow covered peaks to the west.
We move again and this time down Moose Creek to the North Fork of the Sun River, where we will make camp at the Sulphur Creek location. This is a beautiful campsite right on the river. Total: About 14 miles and 5.5 hours of riding time
We layover here at Sulphur Creek. Of course the fishing is fantastic here! This is a beautiful stretch of river with many nice holes. The Cutthroat and Rainbows are seldom finicky and offer fun on a dry fly. For those not interested in fishing, there is a nice pleasant ride through the meadows and grassy hillsides that make up the lower North Fork region.
The final day on the trail does not disappoint. After leaving camp and moving up the North Fork, past the Gates Park Pack Bridge, we leave the Sun and head up Headquarters Creek. We'll be riding through thick Lodge Pole regrowth from the “88” fire much of the way. Near the head of the drainage, the highest stretch of the “Teton Peaks” loom ahead. We'll take a break in a high alpine basin below the Headquarters Pass and Rocky Mountain, the highest peak in the Bob Marshall Wilderness at 9392'. It is pretty common to have some mountain goats visit us at this spot. Then it's up and over Headquarters Pass at 7800' and then switch back down into the South Fork of the Teton Trailhead, where we will be met by crew from the ranch. You'll say goodbye to your horse here, as we turn the stock loose for a break and to graze their way back to the 7 Lazy P guest ranch. Guests will get a short ride around to the lodge. Guests will depart the lodge mid morning of the following day.
What should I bring?
"We did a pack trip last summer. We had an excellent time. The family, employees included, was so wonderful. Coming from a metropolitan area it was so refreshing to visit somewhere where people are still so friendly. Montana is beautiful and I would highly recommend this company for a pack take on a camping vacation. "
